Oran Mara is the most recent updated Elf design by Richard Woods and was professionally built by Elf Catamaran SRL in 2019 to Richard Woods’ specification. She was rigged and fitted out by Ardfern Yacht Centre in Argyll, Scotland, and has been cruised occasionally and day-sailed on the west coast of Scotland.
The Elf has a large open deck with accommodation for four. The high-roach mainsail offers an easily managed but powerful rig with slab-reefing, assisted by lazy-jacks and bag. Roller reefing controls the genoa, and there is no need to leave the cockpit for reefing either sail.
The low aspect ratio keels have a draught of 0.65m and allow access to many shallower anchorages and easy beaching.
A Yamaha 9.9hp outboard (long shaft) is fixed to the centre of the aft cross beam and provides ample power.
The boat is suitable for short / single-handed sailing. She is stable, light, very responsive on the helm, fast, and points high for a catamaran. In moderate winds, speeds of 10knts are easily reached. The accommodation and equipment are suitable for short cruises and day sailing.
